Rolling Start

Introduction

The rolling start feature delays motor power delivery until you reach the specified speed. This can be beneficial for some pedal sensor types and for sensorless start operations to prevent inadvertent motor operation at low speeds.

Configuration

  1. Enable Features bit 9 Rolling start enable.
  2. Set Rolling start speed, Rolling start speed 1, Rolling start speed 2 and Rolling start speed 3 as applicable.
    1. If no Assist mode source has been selected, Rolling start speed applies.
    2. If an Assist mode source is chosen, Rolling start speed 1, Rolling start speed 2 and Rolling start speed 3 map to your assist levels and dictate the start speed accordingly.

TIP

Recommend setting the start speed to 0.5 km/h or greater at a minimum. Testing will dictate an appropriate level to set this value to ensure a smooth start to power delivery.

For example, above the speed which the motor and controller can close the sensorless motor control loop.

An external speed sensor is required for clutched motors as the motor RPM will be 0 until motor assistance is provided.
